Winch Snatch Blocks & Pulley Blocks
A winch snatch block is a useful recovery accessory for changing the direction of a winch line or creating a multi-line pull where additional mechanical advantage is required.
Snatch blocks are commonly used in 4x4 recovery, vehicle loading, forestry and commercial winching applications where a straight-line pull is not practical or where the load on the winch needs to be managed more effectively.
What Does a Snatch Block Do?
A snatch block allows the winch rope to run around a sheave, making it possible to redirect the pull or rig a double-line system.
In a correctly arranged double-line pull, the winch can gain mechanical advantage and reduce the line load seen by the winch. Actual performance depends on rigging geometry, friction, rope angle and the efficiency of the pulley system.
Choosing the Right Snatch Block
The correct winch pulley block should be selected according to the expected line loads, rope type and rigging arrangement rather than winch capacity alone.
Important factors include:
-
Rated capacity: The block must be suitably rated for the maximum load it may experience in the intended rigging configuration. Block loading can increase significantly depending on the angle between the rope legs.
-
Rope compatibility: The sheave diameter and groove profile should be suitable for the rope being used, whether steel wire or synthetic rope.
-
Sheave condition: The running surface should be smooth and free from burrs, sharp edges or damage that could harm the winch rope.
-
Attachment point: Shackles, soft shackles, recovery points and other connecting equipment must also be appropriately rated for the loads involved.
Snatch Blocks for Synthetic & Steel Winch Rope
Snatch blocks can be used with both steel wire rope and synthetic winch rope when the block is designed and sized appropriately.
When using synthetic winch rope, inspect the sheave carefully for scoring, sharp edges or surface damage that could abrade the fibres. A smooth, suitable sheave is important for protecting the rope during use.
Single-Line, Double-Line & Directional Pulls
A snatch block can be used to redirect a winch line around an obstacle or to create a double-line pull back towards the vehicle or another anchor point.
Rigging loads can vary considerably with line angle, so the winch, block, rope, shackles and anchor points should all be selected as part of the complete recovery system.
