Shackles form an important connection between recovery points, winch ropes, straps and other rigging components, so the correct type and rated capacity should be selected for the complete recovery setup.
Bow Shackles, D-Shackles & Soft Shackles
Different shackle designs suit different connection points and recovery arrangements:

Bow shackles: Their wider curved body provides more room for straps, rope eyes and multiple connections, making them a common choice for recovery and winching applications.

D-shackles: The narrower body is suited to applications where the load is primarily aligned with the centreline of the shackle. Side loading should be avoided unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.

Soft shackles: Made from high-strength synthetic fibre, soft shackles are lightweight and can be useful where reducing metal hardware or protecting compatible recovery points is desirable.
Choosing the Right Recovery Shackle
The correct shackle should be selected according to its stated rating, the expected recovery loads and the components it will connect.
Important considerations include:

Rated capacity: Check the manufacturer's Working Load Limit, rated load or other stated capacity and ensure it is suitable for the forces expected in the recovery setup.

Connection compatibility: The shackle must fit the recovery point, strap eye, rope eye or other attachment without forcing, pinching or creating an unsuitable load path.

Load direction: Steel shackles generally perform best when loaded in the direction intended by the manufacturer. Side loading can reduce allowable capacity.

Complete recovery system: The shackle, rope, strap, recovery point and any other hardware should all be appropriately rated for the intended use.
Steel vs Soft Recovery Shackles
Steel shackles are durable and widely used for 4x4 and commercial recovery. They should be inspected for deformation, corrosion, damaged threads and excessive wear before use.
Soft shackles are significantly lighter and can be easier to handle around compatible recovery points. They should be inspected for cuts, abrasion, heat damage, contamination and damaged fibres.
Neither type is automatically the best choice for every recovery setup. Selection should be based on the attachment points, expected loads and manufacturer's guidance.
Recovery Shackle Inspection & Use
Inspect shackles before every recovery. Steel shackles showing deformation, damaged pins, cracks or significant corrosion should be removed from service. Soft shackles showing cuts, severe abrasion or damaged fibres should also be replaced.
Never use a shackle outside its stated limits, and avoid makeshift attachment points or connections that could place unintended loads on the shackle.
