The Essential 4x4 "Tree Saver"
In the off-road and recovery world, a lifting sling serves a vital secondary purpose: protecting the environment. If you are winching your vehicle out of a bog using a live tree as an anchor point, wrapping your Synthetic Winch Rope or steel cable directly around the trunk will instantly strip the bark and kill the tree, while simultaneously damaging your winch line.
By wrapping a wide, flat polyester lifting sling (commonly called a tree saver or tree trunk protector) around the base of the tree and attaching your winch line to the sling's reinforced eyes via a D-ring shackle, you distribute the immense pressure over a wider surface area. This protects both the tree and your expensive 4x4 Electric Winch equipment.

What does "Duplex Webbing" mean?
Duplex webbing means the sling is constructed from two layers of heavy-duty polyester material stitched together. This double-layer design provides significantly higher strength, durability, and abrasion resistance compared to a thinner, single-layer (simplex) sling, making it the preferred choice for commercial lifting and heavy vehicle recovery.
Is there a difference between a lifting sling and a tree saver strap?
Structurally, no. A high-quality "tree saver" sold in 4x4 shops is exactly the same as an industrial duplex lifting sling. They are both made of reinforced polyester webbing designed for high-tension loads. The wider the sling, the better it acts as a tree saver, as it spreads the force of the pull over a larger area of the tree trunk.
Can I use a lifting sling as a dynamic snatch strap?
No. Lifting slings are made from high-tenacity polyester, which is designed to have very low stretch (typically less than 3% under load). A snatch strap (kinetic recovery strap) is made from nylon and is designed to stretch up to 20% to absorb the shock of a running vehicle recovery. Never use a static lifting sling for a kinetic, running vehicle recovery, as the sudden shock load can snap the strap or tear the recovery points off your vehicle.
How do I check a lifting sling for damage?
Before every use, you should inspect your sling for safety. You must retire and replace the sling immediately if you find any deep cuts in the webbing, severe abrasion where the internal yarns are exposed, melted or charred sections from friction heat, or if the load-bearing stitching around the reinforced eyes is torn.
